What Is Aquaponics Systems And How They Work

Aquaponics systems are a combination of aquaculture and hydroponic. In technical jargon, it is a symbiosis of traditional aquaculture and hydroponic. To understand what aquaponics systems are or how backyard aquaponics work, there is a need to understand some nitty-gritty of aquaculture and hydroponic.

Aquaculture deals with marine life. It is predominantly cultivation of marine organisms which may include snails, fish, prawns or others in a tank, commonly referred to as aquariums. Hydroponic is a sub domain of hydroculture. Hydroponic is the cultivation of plants, which may include fruits and vegetable plants, on water or a liquid solution instead of soil. Aquaculture and hydroponic have numerous shortcomings or challenges which make them very expensive and troublesome. Only few research centers dedicated to biological truths and experimentations have the budget to indulge in aquaculture and hydroponic but aquaponics systems are readily convenient and can be tried out by any and sundry. Even research organizations have started used aquaponics for biological research because of their simplicity and convenient, besides affordability.

In an aquarium or fish tank, the waste produced by the organisms and the steady deterioration of the water demands the supply of fresh water. The nutrient rich water filled with effluents and dirt apart from any other leftovers is undesirable for a fish tank or aquarium with marine life. In hydroponic, the plants can grow phenomenally fast but they need a consistent supply of extremely nutrient rich water or liquid solution. These two challenges are undone and made into benefits by combining aquaculture and hydroponic in aquaponics systems.




In backyard aquaponics, the waste generated by the fishes or marine life pollutes the water but it makes for extremely nutrient rich liquid source for the plants being grown on top of the tank or aquarium. These plants extract all the nutrients from the water and thus render the water clean. This cycle saves cost of water and it makes the growth of plants sustainable because providing source for that much nutrient would have cost much more than operating an aquarium of marine life.

Furthermore, there are bacteria in the aquaponics systems that can convert the ammonia from the waster in the water to nitrates that create a nitrogen cycle in the system. How To Set-Up Your Own Diy-Aquaponics-Easy Aquaponic Design


Aquaponics is a food growing method by which you grow plants and aquatic animals in one system and both benefit from each other in a perfect symbiosis. Diy aquaponics is not difficult to make as long as you follow the instructions carefully.

Here is what you need for making aquaponics systems – a frame in which you can put two containers one under the other, two wire baskets and two plastic containers. The bigger one is put on the bottom and is for the fish and the smaller one is put on top for the plants. When you go to the shop to buy the frame make sure that you let the consultant know you need it for diy aquaponics. For the plumbing you need an electric submersible pump which will pump the water to the grow bed; a bypass ball-valve which pumps back water to the fish tank providing more aeration and you can control the amount of water that goes to the grow bed; male and female threaded adapters – the female adapter is put in the right corner of the grow bed, then you put the male adapter on the top of the grow bed. Use some silicone on the bottom to make the connection waterproof; a sandpipe that will exude the water from the grow bed. In order to provide slow watering of the grow bed and quick draining, you need a bell siphon. It is placed in the middle of the grow bed. The media guard that is installed in the far right corner of the grow bed prevents dirt and particles to get into the siphon.



Now that you have put together all the parts of the diy aquaponics you need to add the water in the fish tank and begin to pump it up to the grow bed. Make a test to see that everything is watertight and the pump works properly. If everything is fine, you can fill the grow bed with some growing media like river stones, perlite, etc. It should be something that allows water to flow freely. Now you can add the fish in the lower container and starting plantings. The fish will produce ammonia that will trigger the system to work.

Although it looks a bit complicated, it is a simple system that you can put indoors and watch the plants grow.

DIY AQUAPONICS - EASY AQUAPONICS DESIGN LEARN HOW YOU CAN BUILD YOUR OWN AQUAPONICS SYSTEMS.


    If you know anything about aquaponics then you might already know that this is a type of gardening that is not going to require you to have any soil.  The nutrients that are needed for the 
plants to grow will come from fish.  The water in the fish tank will be transferred to the beds that the plants are in.  This is becoming more and more popular. If you are interested in this type of gardening then you will want to know that aquaponic gardening can be done on your own.

  In order to create an aquaphonic system it will be very important to select the right size of containers for your plants and the fish.  You also need to make sure that your DIY aquaponics is set up properly so that the plant containers are going to filter back into the fish containers.  This will be very easy to do as you will only need some PVC pipe. 

 Always complete the fish tank first with the air pump and the stones.  It will be most important for you to leave the water for at least 12 hours before you put the fish into the containers.  Also, make sure that you are testing the water before you put the fish into the water.  

 Finally, you are going to add the plants to the containers. Always make sure that you are cleaning the roots off completely so that they are not going to contaminate the water.  Be sure that the recirculating pump is working correctly so that the plant container will be filled and drained continually. 


 If you are serious about an aquaponics system then there are a few tips that you should be following as well.  First, it is going to be best for you to start with a small system before you move onto something that is larger.  Second, try to find a plan in different books that you will be able to implement when it comes to your first aquaponic gardening system.  Always be sure that you are doing some research to ensure that you are selecting fish that are good for the climate you live in.  In the end, make sure that you are continually using rubber or plastic liners for any metal containers.  This will help to prevent any toxins for forming and possibly harming your plants or killing your fish.
